Coffee was introduced in the Philippines by the Spaniards in 1740.  Coffee growing then became so wide-spread that by 1880, Philippines had become the fourth largest coffee producing nation.  Today, the Philippines is the only coffee exporting country that does not meet its domestic requirements (Cada, 1990).  To address this concern, the government has undertaken various initiatives that would help enhance the productivity of the Philippine coffee.

Research on leadership and management development in the post-modern business era has focused in identifying the appropriate means of developing leaders and managers who are able to steer enterprises in a rapidly changing environment that is characterized by diverse multicultural settings; and fast-paced digitally-connected global marketplaces.  The primary goal of this study is to generate a framework, using the results of earlier studies that will useful in examining how management educators in higher educational institutions can approach the development of management and leadership competencies among executives; and within the context of sustainable entrepreneurship.

Taiwan uses computer expertise to lever open trade door

Taiwan comes bearing the gift of computer expertise to APEC, which along with the World Trade Organisation is the only international forum it has been allowed to join due to opposition from China.

Although the Taiwanese leaders have not been invited to take part in the APEC Leaders' Summit, they can appoint a presidential representative.

This year, President Chen Shui-bian has appointed Stan Shih, best known as the founder of Acer, the world's third-largest manufacturer of laptops and personal computers, to represent him in Sydney.

Australia is part of the Asia-Pacific region. The country's strategic focus has shifted to Asia-Pacific since Australia introduced in the 1980s the idea of integrating into Asia. Australia's chief areas of concern include the South Pacific, Southeast Asian and Northeast Asian areas and, therefore, the country is enthusiastic about getting involved in relevant security mechanisms.

NJIT researchers develop inexpensive, easy process to produce solar panels

Researchers at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) have developed an inexpensive solar cell that can be painted or printed on flexible plastic sheets. “The process is simple,” said lead researcher and author Somenath Mitra, PhD, professor and acting chair of NJIT’s Department of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences. “Someday homeowners will even be able to print sheets of these solar cells with inexpensive home-based inkjet printers. Consumers can then slap the finished product on a wall, roof or billboard to create their own power stations.”
